| Medical groups are warning that hundreds of overseas-trained doctors working in areas of need in regional Australia are under threat of being deregistered.
International medical graduates who moved to Australia before 2008 are now required to sit a uniform national test.
Already two doctors in Queensland have failed to meet the mark, and doctors say unless there is recognition of their practical work many more will not retain their registration.
There are now more than 2,000 overseas doctors working in regional Australia in what are known as "areas of need".
Dr Susan Douglas, vice-president of the Australian Doctors Trained Overseas Association, says many of these doctors' jobs are threatened by the tests.
