| A GENERAL practitioner has been suspended from practice for six months and fined $6,000 after he admitted to 47 counts of prescribing Subutex and sleeping pills.
Dr Ng Kwei Teo of KT Ng Clinic at Block 246 Hougang Street 22, pleaded guilty to the charges at a disciplinary committee (DC) inquiry held on July 19, said a statement from the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) on Monday.
Long-term consumption of hypnotics may lead to drug dependence and that the formulation of a long term management plan is crucial if these patients are to be treated without dependency on such medication.
The DC found that Dr Ng had acted in disregard of his professional duties as he had continued to prescribe Subutex and / or Benzodiazepines without appropriate specialist referral even after the Ministry of Health issued guidelines in 2005.
