| Australia is inching closer to a new federal government. The seat count seems firm, and now five very different men hold the keys to the two parties’ fate. But what is right for them to demand as the price for their support?
Only issues of great national importance and urgency should be made hard conditions for passing supply and opposing no-confidence motions. While it is fine to place a range of issues on the table, they should be left to cabinet, parliamentary and public consultation.
The regional independents have raised important concerns about the decline of rural Australia and growing inequities in service delivery and life opportunity. Listening to Kennedy independent Bob Katter talk about the death of rural communities is genuinely moving. Reversing this should be a priority.
