| Subject: Idiots: Seoul cracks down on cross-border tweets Thu Aug 19, 2010 5:44 am | |
| South Koreans who post comments on North Korean Twitter accounts may fall foul of national security laws that bar the country's citizens from communicating with their old foes.
''People would have to bear in mind that they could be violating the law'' if the account is confirmed to be North Korean, a Unification Ministry spokeswoman, Lee Jong-joo, said.
The government was investigating accounts on Twitter and YouTube, she said.
Messages condemning South Korea and the US have been posted on Twitter this month under the name Uriminzok, meaning ''our people'', with links to a website run by the North's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea.
The warning underscores the government's wariness about exposing its citizens to North Korean propaganda, even after the past two decades have delivered democracy and high living standards in the South as the North's economy floundered.
Meanwhile, a North Korean trainer jet crashed in China on Tuesday, killing the pilot, who may have been trying to defect.
