It’s been a long, tough, slog. What seemed to be such a simple idea — passing legislation that would help law enforcement while hindering illicit massage parlors — turned out to be a two year struggle. The law that requires more stringent licensing of the parlors, which some say are fronts for houses of prostitution and human trafficking, is finally in place. No longer will law enforcement have to conduct undercover sting operations that, at times, go astray. Now they can simple walk in and ask to see the licenses of employees and of the business, sort of like a traffic stop.

Of course, supporters of the massage parlors have a different take on the new law. The Bibb County Libertarian Party believes, according to its news release, that Mayor Robert Reichert is using “governmental force to infringe on the free-choices made by consenting adults in the privacy of spas to hire who they want to give them massages and other agreed upon services for a donation.” What’s troubling is that the Libertarian Party states it will support spa owners’ efforts to “circumvent the law” and it calls the spas “honorable establishments.”

That’s just one of the reasons the Libertarian Party has remained a minor one.
