| Iran's supreme leader has spoken out against music in the Islamic Republic, saying it should not be practised or taught in the country, reports say.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made the comments in response to a request from a 21-year-old follower who said he was thinking of taking up music lessons but wanted to know if they were acceptable, The Guardian reported.
Khamenei told the 21-year-old in a statement, reported by the semi-official Fars news agency, that it was better for young people to "spend their valuable time in learning science and essential and useful skills, and fill their time with sport and healthy recreations instead of music".
"Although music is halal, promoting and teaching it is not compatible with the highest values of the sacred regime of the Islamic Republic," he said.
The Guardian wrote the remarks were among "the most extreme comments by a senior regime figure since the 1979 revolution".
Khamenei, the spiritual leader of Iran, is known to harbour views critical of music but rarely expresses them publicly.
He banned Western-style music during his presidency in the 1980s.
