The breakdown of a long-term relationship usually results in a lot of heartache.

For Richard Jordan, it meant a Lamborghini Gallardo with almost 150,000 kilometres on the clock.

According to the story on motoring blog Jalopnik, Jordan was so devastated by the break-up with his fiancee that he sold his house and most of his possessions to fund the purchase of a 2006 Gallardo.

He then set off on a wandering trip in the car around the US that lasted more than a year. He crossed the country three times as he explored and re-traced family holidays from his childhood.

He didn't work and lived in motels, moving almost constantly to avoid feeling tied down. As well as racking up 53 speeding tickets, he covered 147,749 kilometres.

But while he enjoyed his soul-searching trip, the Lamborghini eventually cried enough.

The timing chain stretched and that resulted in terminal damage to the engine.

So Jordan is left to finish paying off a Lamborghini that can't be driven. But at least he says he has found some peace and has settled down again in Dallas, Texas.

He apparently plans to repair the car.
