A Brisbane woman who left her 13-week-old baby alone in a running bath while she house-hunted over the phone and on the internet has only narrowly avoided jail for manslaughter.

The 30-year-old woman, who cannot be named to protect the identity of her surviving child, told police and ambulance officers the bath tap had been turned on the infant's head for up to 30 minutes while she went to another room to make a series of telephone calls to real estate and job agencies on the afternoon of February 10, 2006.

She also sent a fax to her husband and may have surfed the internet before discovering the unconscious child floating in the water, Brisbane's Supreme Court heard today.

The little girl later died in hospital.
