Stocks of 2007: First Solar Shines, E*Trade Tumbles

First Solar Inc. topped the gainers of 2007, jumping 796 percent as investors bet on growing demand for solar energy and oil approached $100 a barrel. The collapse of the U.S. subprime-mortgage market weighed on financial stocks globally. E*Trade Financial Corp. tumbled 84 percent as the value of asset-backed securities dropped and customers defected.

The following tables show the best and worst performers of 2007. The global winners and losers are based on members of the MSCI World index. The regional charts are based on the Standard & Poor's 500 index for the U.S., the Dow Jones Stoxx 600 index for Europe, and the MSCI Asia Pacific index. Stock moves are adjusted for U.S. dollars.
