TWO men will each spend more than a decade in jail for their part in a conspiracy to import ecstasy powder worth up to $20 million.

Judge Paul Lakatos sentenced Montenegrin national Dalibor Pasinovic, 37, to a non-parole period of 10 years and one month in the NSW District Court on Friday.

Terrence John McCraw, 59, of Sefton, received 11 years and two months without parole.

Pasinovic and McCraw were arrested on August 9, 2007, after the Australian Federal Police discovered 40 kilograms of ecstasy powder imported on the container ship Sophie, owned by a Mediterranean shipping company. Judge Lakatos said both men were on the intermediate level of an international drug smuggling operation and played "an essential and crucial role".

Pasinovic was found to have transported the powder, believed to be from Antwerp, to Australia on a two-month journey as the second mate on the Sophie.
