| WINTER HAVEN - Pamela Winston's pet pigs turn up their noses at the mention of politics -- the mudslinging is too much even for them.
So imagine Pamela's surprise when Princess -- one her dearly departed potbellies -- got a letter encouraging her to vote.
"I found that a little strange," Winston told FOX 13.
This time of year, a lot of political organizations are sending out letters encouraging people to register to vote. Pamela opened one up recently without looking at whose name was on the front, and didn't think much about it.
When she glanced at who it was addressed to, she did a double take.
The pitch letter was for "Princess" Winston.
Pamela says she doesn't have the faintest idea why the letter was sent to Princess. A few days later, she got a follow-up recorded phone call reminding Princess to return the voter registration application. She didn't.
It turns out that the letter and the call came from the Voter Participation Center in Washington, D.C. It's targeting unmarried women in two states, including Florida, trying to get them registered to vote. The center sent out close to a million letters in Florida alone.
A spokeswoman says it's impossible to figure out how Princess's name ended up on their list. The Center buys commercial lists, which get their names from a lot of different places. Frequently, someone will put their pet's name on a magazine subscription, or warranty, and it will end up on a list.
Pamela says she never has done that.
Even if Princess was signed up to vote, she couldn't.
"If she fell through the cracks and was able to have her application processed, she would have had to show a photo in order to vote," said Judy Walker, with the Polk County Elections Office.
Pamela says none of her six other pet pigs are registered to vote either. In fact, they are less interested in politics than they are in having their bellies scratched. When they do, they fall over on their side, close their eyes, and doze off.
"Usually we don't discuss politics in my household," Pamela added.
