| Subject: OZschwitz: Last year's road toll left in dust, proving once again, that harsher laws do not work Sun Dec 27, 2009 5:33 pm | |
| THE NSW holiday road toll has already surpassed last year's total - even with six days until the police operation finishes.
An 18-year-old woman who died in a car accident near Mudgee yesterday was the latest fatality in NSW, bringing the state's toll to 14 deaths this Christmas period. The national holiday toll stands at 45.
So far this year there have been 84 more deaths on NSW roads than in the same period last year.
But the riddle of this year's increased road toll lies not in what happened this year, but in what did not happen last year.
Last year's record-low road toll was a lucky break, or as police say a ''statistical glitch''. There were fewer crashes in which more than one person was killed. Substantially fewer pedestrians and motorcyclists were killed last year than in previous years.
