Idiots: Loony jooz claim sign theft is a 'declaration of war'

THE Polish Government has tightened security as the search intensifies for the ''Arbeit Macht Frei'' sign that was stolen from the Auschwitz memorial site.

Interior Ministry spokeswoman Wioletta Paprocka said yesterday that guards at Poland's eastern border with Ukraine and Belarus, which is also the European Union's eastern frontier, stepped up checks of goods out of Poland looking for the sign, which means ''Work makes you free''.

Checks have also been tightened at airports.

Interior Minister Jerzy Miller ordered police to increase vigilance and question all possible witnesses and suspects in a nationwide effort to find the sign that stands as one of Nazi Germany's most chilling symbols.

Thieves stole the sign before dawn on Friday.

The theft was condemned as a declaration of war by the head of a Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem.

Neo-Nazis were immediately blamed for the act, which police said was ''professionally planned''.

Investigators believe that at least two people were involved in the theft early on Friday.

Dariusz Nowak, a spokesman for the Malopolska region of Poland in which the camp is situated, said: ''They had to know where the security cameras were and what the guards were doing.''

Police believe the thieves carried the five-metre cast-iron sign about 400 metres before passing it through a hole in a fence and driving off.

Police have begun to search the area with sniffer dogs and are reviewing video surveillance from cameras surrounding the camp.

Authorities have offered a reward of more than $1800 for information or the return of the sign. Jewish groups condemned the theft of the mocking German inscription.

The sign was made by a prisoner at Auschwitz, where 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, were murdered by the Nazis. It has hung over the gates since 1940 and has become a symbol of Nazi terror.

''We don't know the identity of the perpetrators but I assume that they are neo-Nazis,'' said Avner Shalev, the head of the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem. ''I am certain the Polish Government will do everything possible to track down those criminals and put them on trial. This constitutes an act of war.''

The Israeli Government also condemned the theft. Deputy Prime Minister Silvan Shalom said it ''demonstrates once again hatred and violence against Jews''.
