| DRIVING faster on some NSW roads is safer than driving slowly, two motoring groups say.
With new figures out yesterday showing the state's road toll is well up on this time last year, NRMA Motoring & Services and the lobby group National Motorists Association Australia have argued that speed can save lives.
They say speed restrictions that keep motorists driving on rural roads for long periods may increase the likelihood of an accident occurring as this pushes up levels of fatigue, boredom and frustration.
"Sensible higher limits will rid our roads of much intimidating and aggressive driving," said the NMAA's vice-president, Gavin Goeldner.
For several years pro-speed advocates have been calling for limits over 110km/h on NSW roads in the name of safety, and the NRMA recently reignited the speed issue with its stance on limits on the Newell Highway.
In August the Roads and Traffic Authority completed a safety review on the road that connects Victoria and Queensland through NSW. Citing road geometry, traffic volumes and the high percentage of heavy vehicles on the road, the report recommended the speed limit be dropped from 110km/h to 100km/h between the Queensland and Victorian borders.
The NRMA Motoring & Services president, Wendy Machin, subsequently said this would add an hour to the travel time between Queensland and NSW. She said with fatigue-related crashes accounting for 26 per cent of casualties on the road, she could not see how lowering the limit would lower the death toll. The move would also remove the existing buffer between cars and trucks, which are limited to 100km/h.
The NMAA has gone further and called for a reassessment of maximum speeds on the state's roads and the introduction of limits over 110km/h where safe. It says new limits would reduce journey times and the possibility of fatigue, reduce exposure to oncoming traffic when overtaking, and lead to a reduction in impatience and road rage.
Figures published yesterday showed 393 people had died on NSW roads this year; 374 people died on the states roads last year.
