| Subject: Statist injustice: Terror Act Used to Block Climate Activist's Trip Thu Oct 15, 2009 6:55 pm | |
| A British climate change activist says police abused anti-terror laws to prevent him from traveling to this week's climate change conference in Copenhagen. Police yanked him and another activist off a bus they stopped on the way to the Channel Tunnel. The activist, who has taken part in several acts of civil disobedience, was questioned and sent back to London under the nation's Terrorism Act, reports the Guardian.
"People who are practicing civil disobedience on climate change in the face of ineffectual government action are certainly not terrorists, and I am sure that their actions will be vindicated by history," he said. The activist plans to attempt again to travel to Copenhagen. An official with Britain's home office stood by the action saying enforcement of the terrorism law was up to the discretion of local forces.
It's outrageous to stop someone from travelling to Copenhagen to protest on climate change. - Mike Childs, head of climate policy at Friends of the Earth
