NEW YORK -- An off-duty New York City police officer was arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter and drunk driving charges in connection to the death of a Brooklyn pedestrian.

NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said a car containing two off-duty officers and other passengers was on Avenue N in Brooklyn around 1 a.m. Sunday when it hit a woman.

Officer Andrew Kelly was taken into custody. The victim, Vernonica Valnords was taken to Kings County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Valnords had been crossing the street trying to hail a cab after leaving a wedding celebration.
