| Senior police have been forced to front the media and admit two officers stripped off and ran around a police van at a set of traffic lights yesterday afternoon.
But they've stopped short of conceding the officers had attended a buck's party at Cleveland, on Brisbane's bayside.
"I believe it was some sort of pre-wedding party," Deputy Commissioner (Specialist Operations) Ian Stewart told reporters this afternoon.
The police service's ethical standards unit is investigating allegations the two officers ran naked from a white Toyota HiAce stopped at the intersection of Moreton Bay and Redland Bay roads at Capalaba about 4.15pm.
The van was believed to be en route from Cleveland to Oxley when the incident happened, sparking a complaint from a woman who reported seeing the naked men re-enter the vehicle after their run.
Deputy Commissioner Stewart said he understood about five or six officers were in the van at the time, including a police sergeant, but all but one of them were off duty at the time.
The two officers who allegedly performed the daylight "nudie run" could face wilful exposure and public nuisance charges along with internal disciplinary action.
"Early indications are there may have been other officers (in the van) without clothes on," Deputy Commissioner Stewart said.
The officers were from the Specialist Services Branch at Oxley.
Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers said the officers realised their actions were unacceptable.
"The officers are remorseful and extremely sorry for the embarrassment caused to the Queensland Police Service," he said in a statement.
"The incident occurred during a buck's party and is totally out of character with officers' normal demeanour."
A second police vehicle may also have been used to transport officers to the private function at Cleveland.
While it had not been the subject of a public complaint, the police investigation would also look into whether the use of the vehicle was appropriate, Deputy Commissioner Stewart said.
"The behaviour of the individuals is unacceptable ... the use of government property for private purposes is unacceptable," he said.
"Words fail me to be able to describe the disappointment.
"It is a very unpleasant feeling when things like these are raised."
Deputy Commissioner Stewart said the allegations were particularly embarrassing in the wake of a damning Crime and Misconduct report on improper police behaviour in July.
Assistant Commissioner (Operation Support Command) Alan Davey said although the officers had not yet been stood down, they were being interviewed and were not on duty.
"They're not exposed to the public," he said.
Meanwhile, the Ethical Standards Unit will also investigate allegations a policeman who runs a private armoury business breached the Customs Act and the Weapons Act.
It is believed the claims relate to the importation of restricted materials, such as weapons parts.
The officer, from the Operational Support Command in Brisbane, is on leave.
Deputy Commissioner Stewart said the police service had previously given him permission to run his armoury business separate from his police role.
"The investigations do not relate to his role as a police officer," he said.
"(The matter) relates to an Australian Customs and Border Protection Service investigation."
