| Here's a question. Assume you get a letter from the Tax Office. No, don't panic. It's not an audit or news that they've finally picked up that $10.20 in interest you forgot to declare in 2006. This is an educational letter - a friendly missive to ensure you know how to properly claim your work expenses.
Feeling paranoid, or what?
Last year the Tax Office sent such letters to 422,000 individuals; a further 134,800 letters were sent to people about rental income and expenses and capital gains tax. It wrote to 65,000 people asking them to review their claims - and that's before we even get to all the snooping and cross-checking they do as part of their ''data matching'' efforts.
