Subject: Idiot: Claims new Ferrari F458 is a waste of money Sun Aug 02, 2009 7:36 am
Part I
Modena, Italy - Ferrari has announced the successor to the F430, the Ferrari 458 Italia, giving gullible hacks the world over the chance to salivate into their keyboards about how wonderful it is.
Wired, for example, bleats that the 458 'shows, once again, why Ferrari is the best carmaker in the world. Automakers around the globe would give anything to make a car this good, and it’s only Ferrari’s entry-level model.'
The 458 will cost 'considerably more' than the outgoing F430, which carries a $255,000 price tag for the entry-level model. And like the F430, it is exactly the same as every other Ferrari produced in the last twenty years - impractical, overpriced, unreliable, obscenely expensive to service and painted red.
So it has a 4.5 liter V8 producing 570 horsepower, will top 200 mph and do 0-60 in 3.4 seconds. You could buy 100 used motorcycles for the same price that could match that 0-60 time and when was the last time you drove at 100 mph, let alone 200?
Ferrari does, of course, make more money from selling hats and key rings to people who have never sat in a Ferrari - let alone having driven or owned one - than it does by selling its absurd vehicles. The nearest the millions of Ferrari fans ever get to the Ferrari experience is pinning a poster to the bedroom wall or watching reruns of Magnum PI.
One undeniable motoring fact is that every last one of the people you see wearing a Ferrari hat or jacket doesn't own a Ferrari and never will, with the exception of a racing driver who has had one plonked on his head by a PR man before a press conference and gets one free as a company car.
People who actually own a Ferrari are, to a man, the kind of self-obsessed weasels you'd cross the road to avoid. And they'd be walking because the Ferrari will be under a dust sheet, broken or being serviced.
There's a lot of low-mileage Ferraris out there and they have low mileage because once you've saved up the purchase price, you can't afford to change the oil every 3,000 miles or the timing belts every 30,000 to avoid the engine turning itself into a collection of lovingly-crafted scrap metal.
The factory specifies service intervals of 15,000 miles, which includes a tune-up and valve adjustment. The 30,000-mile services are the big ones and involve the removal and reinstallation of the engine, along with replacement of the water pump, the timing belts, ignition parts, the clutch linings, various seals and hoses.
In terms of spare parts, a set of Repco brake pads at $45 works just as well as Ferrari pads at $180. A $10 radiator fan switch from a VW Rabbit is the same as the Ferrari part at $63 and the electric mirror switch from a BMW 7-Series costing $26 is the same one Ferrari will sell you for $70.
A Ferrari may be an aspirational vehicle, but then so are BMWs, Mercedes and Jaguars costing a fraction of the price and offering practical, reliable, motoring enjoyment. These cars are bought by people who know about driving rather than simply having more money than sense.
The bottom line is that for the thick end of $300,000, you'd be better off spending your money on something else. Like a house.
But of course this won't stop Toyota-driving hacks from wetting themselves with excitement when they see a red shiny object adorned with a prancing horse, even if it's just a Ferrari pen.
Editor's note: The writer drives a Jaguar, so a small degree of bias may have crept into this article. He also assures us that he has actually driven a Ferrari around the Silverstone Formula One circuit.
Sour Grapes? Jul 29, 2009 05:58 On one hand, the writer is correct of course...a Ferrari is never a sensible purchase - then again, that is not the point of a Ferrari is it?
I could leave it at that, but frankly the owner of this article is so obviously biased against Ferrari that it is almost sickening!

Votes: -5 Marc Jul 29, 2009 06:16 Just by reading the article, I was 200% sure the Editor was driving a British car like a Jag, and is probably British. I am afraid Jag is probably amongst the worse production cars even build, and it might very well disappear in the next few years if they cannot sell their new ugly XJ. What's more, a Jag is extremely expensive, depreciates at lightning speed and CO2 and mileage performance are nothing to be proud of. Not mentioning they are also very very unreliable. Yes, Ferrari have flaws, but they are toys for rich people who do not care about the extra servicing needs. It is the case for all supercars, I am afraid. They are all unreliable, whether BMW, Audi, Lambo, (let's not name an Anerican make as they are all R....sh) and need constant attention. If you do not want that, don't ask that level of performance and take a normal car.
[Andrew adds: You might want to check why Jaguar has knocked Lexus off the top of the reliablity and user satisfaction charts in the last few years.]

Ferrari envy? Jul 29, 2009 08:03 Of course a Ferrari is a waste of money! Anyone who would argue differently is genetically defective.
Any vehicle above and beyond the bare minimum necessary to accomplish the basic reason of transportation of people or goods, is a waste of money.
But then, that's the whole point. It's my money to waste, so if I want to waste it on a vehicle, that's my business. Certainly not anyone else's, and DEFINITELY not the government's!

Votes: +2 Wrong article, wrong place, wrong readers Jul 29, 2009 08:03 If you can afford one single Ferrari, then you're elegible to all the pains in the *ss described by this article. But, unfortunately for the author, the typical Ferrari owner is a rich (very rich to outrageously rich) oldie that usually can afford one or more Ferraris, together with Porsches and such. The average mileage is low just bcuz the man doesn't have enuff time to drive them all on a regular basis, and most of the time he sits in the back seat of some Rolls or Limo. And the ultimate reason is that a Ferrari is a status symbol, and not just a car, and neither the author nor the typical readers of this site are likely to fall into the category described above... we can either dream about owning one (w/o the cons) or turning green with envy towards the ones that do own one... the author, evidently, chose the latter option. Take it easy, Andrew. =)

Votes: +2 Nonsense from a know nothing Jul 29, 2009 09:25 I'm no fan of Ferarri, but how does this help me "Know More, Do More" (as the TG Daily headline says)? This contains zero actual information and a lot of bias.
Yes, while they may source a few switches from outside automotive suppliers, I'd bet they test every one before selecting the ones to install. In any case it is sometimes better to buy an item that works, rather than re-invent it to no real advantage.
But brake pads the same as generic? I doubt the author had the first clue about the arcane science of brake pads. Does he even have the first bit of data about the friction coefficient of either the Repco or Ferrari pads he mentions? How about how the coefficient changes at different temperatures? The Repco pads might even have slightly better grip on the first cold stop at the end of the driveway, but what about when you've got the brakes up to 1200F (which is only mid-range for a high performance car)? Is he really stupid enough to actually trust a $300K car and his life to a set of cheap pads without any actual data or testing?
The author is an idiot and so are the publishers who let him publish this drivel. I want my 2 minutes back

I have gone through over 20 different Ferrari's... all of them older than 1976 and they had their moments, but they were great fun. I owned a bunch of jag E-Types and they were a bit truck like because of their weight bias and 4 shock rears.. sounded very nice, but were not very comfortable and they were electrical nightmares. Let's not forget about the over heating!
When you buy a Ferrari, there is a cache that goes along with it, as opposed to the Jaguars built on a Ford Taurus body. Still, the XK's are very nice, but so are the litany of Ferrari's that are out now.
Out of all of the cars I have owned, my favorite Ferrari's were the Daytona, a 275GTB SWB, 275 GTS and a 308GTB fiberglass coupe. I also had a 1968 Miura and that was the one I should have kept. Loads of fun, great sounds and terrible lift at over 120mph. Each one of the cars mentioned had webers, so I always had a fire extinguisher handy.
Don't be so angry... no matter how you slice it, Ferrari's are pure sex and although they might not be as reliable as some would like, someone that shells out 100k - 600k for a car is looking for more than what a domestic, common factory built car can offer. Lighten up and go drive an older Ferrari... The sights, sounds and smells are amazing.

Jul 30, 2009 05:19 Based on the author's approach and lack of professionalism, I wouldn't be surprised if he started a lobby group for people that can't fit in Ferrari's making them impractical for people with short arms, short legs, too tall, too wide or just too large to fit properly in the car. Oh, let's not forget the gas mileage!
Ferrari's, almost regardless of which one, are cars that offer sensory overload with regard to sight, smell and sound. There are not many other car manufacturers that can offer the same thrill of those attributes.
When was the last time you were in the presence of a car that wasn't running and stopped to just look or just say "WOW"?
It really is a shame that there was so much bias in the article, but much worse, it is a very angry, bitter approach to a topic that usually warrants praise at various levels in supercars. To write about technology, you should know something about technology, otherwise people can be threatened by it, just like a lack of knowledge in any venue. The author, obviously, has no basis of knowledge in this field or automotive history, making him into the bitter, biting, mislead individual he has proven to be based on his unprofessionally written rant.
Maybe we should forgive the fact that he owns a JAG.

Votes: +1 Nice cars, but when did you last see one? Jul 30, 2009 05:56 Or at least one being driven in anger?
I can put my hand on my heart and say that in almost 20 years of driving Jags, I have never, ever, been overtaken by a Ferrari.
And having spent three years in a job that entailed driving 1,000 miles a week, the only breakdown I suffered was in a 4 liter supercharged V8 XJR when the gearbox exploded.
The gearbox in question was manufactured by Mercedes Benz. Go figure.
BTW, I'm more than happy to discuss any stories with readers, but you'll obviously have to use a genuine email addy on your comments before I can do that.

" are you suggesting you don't respect the traffic laws? (I sure hope you do respect 'em, they exist for everybody's safety after all)
Odds are you've been on the same highway as a ferrari at least once but just didn't notice it, they're not all bright red with a heavy-footed driver. :-/

Votes: -2 This article is a disgrace Jul 31, 2009 10:11 The fact that this is not an automotive website is irrelavent, this "article" has no place in any form of technical setting. It does not even constitute an editorial and belongs no where beyond the authors personal blog, where he may rant to his hearts content.

Votes: +0 THIS GUY IS A BUM Jul 31, 2009 16:47 You own a jaguar and you think you know something about exotic cars. First off, the guy driving the toyota is smarter than you because he was not stupid enough to get something as impractical as a jaguar and actually decided to get a car that he wont have to service every other day. Ferrari is a company that puts plenty of passion and work into their cars in an attempt to please auto enthusiasts all around the world and the fact that you are bashing the new concept is despicable. To say it bluntly, you are brain dead. I just hope that there is a sliver of knowledge remaining in that sad excuse you call a brain which may be rekindled after reading this garbage rant on Ferrari. Just something for you to consider while driving your sparkling blue jaguar XK down the one way street to hell. Go fuck yourself, A dedicated ferrari fan

Votes: +2 Angelina Jolie vs Jane Doe Aug 01, 2009 05:53 As everything else in life you get what you pay for. I own a Ferrari F430 among others and yes Ferrari give you a $10 switch for a $100 to fund a racing obsession. It cost about a $30/ mile to drive a modern day Ferrari. In this economy, I am broke sort of and yet I want one as soon as i can see the light at the end of tunnel. This gives you one reason to live and strive to earn more. You will know it too, once you drive one the track.

SO how about you grow up and go do something productive with your life and stop wasting your time writing these blogs trying to show your self off as someone who understands the joy and sheer intensity of the adrenaline rush that comes with one of these beauties.
