| The cash-strapped Dubai owner of the QE2 is considering opening the British ocean liner as a floating hotel elsewhere in the Middle East or Africa rather than in the struggling Persian Gulf sheikhdom.
The owner Nakheel said in an email it was evaluating options for the ship ahead of a planned refurbishment, and that other ports had expressed interest in hosting the ship.
South Africa's Business Day newspaper, citing a tourism department spokeswoman, reported on Friday that Nakheel had applied to anchor the ship in Cape Town.
Nakheel, a property developer owned by Dubai's government, is struggling financially as a result of the global financial crisis and a steep drop in the Dubai property market.
