| CHILD-CARE centres that fail to lift poor standards are being prosecuted and closed by the Department of Community Services under an aggressive strategy against recalcitrant operators.
The record $56,000 fine imposed on the owner of two north shore child-care centres recently is a sign that courts are also taking breaches of the Children's Services Act more seriously than in the past.
The owner of the Rainbow Cottage Long Day Care Centre in St Ives and the Rainbow Cottage Long Day Care Centre in Turramurra was fined in the Sydney Local Court for 16 breaches of the act.
These included inadequate staff-child ratios, unhygienic nappy-change facilities, and poor maintenance and repairs. An appeal was recently lost in the District Court.
