| THE Fair Work Ombudsman has flexed its muscles, springing a series of night raids on inner-Sydney convenience stores to recover $50,000 in unpaid penalty rates for 80 workers.
At 24 franchised 7-Eleven and City Convenience stores, inspectors spoke to staff, mostly from non-English-speaking backgrounds, who were unaware they should be paid at a higher rate when working late, at weekends and on public holidays.
In half the stores, inspectors found apparent breaches in which employees were paid less than the minimum wage or not paid penalty rates, prompting further investigations.
The ombudsman's executive director, Michael Campbell, said 50 stores had their books examined between September and April. Of these, 15 were found to have broken the law by not paying minimum entitlements or penalty rates. A similar number had not kept adequate records or payslips.
