Qantas Airways has pleaded guilty to price-fixing charges on air cargo shipped from Canada and has been fined $CA155,000 ($168,000), Canada's Competition Bureau said on Tuesday.

Qantas admitted that its freight division fixed surcharges on air cargo exported on certain routes from Canada between May 2002 and February 2006, the bureau said in a news release.

During most or all of this period, Qantas Freight trucked cargo from Canada to the United States for onward shipment to Australia and other destinations, said Competition Bureau spokeswoman Melanie Aitken.

"Conspiracies to fix prices are a serious criminal offence that harm everyone but the perpetrators who cheat the system," she said.

Three other carriers - Air France, KLM and Martinair - earlier pleaded guilty to similar charges in the probe and were fined a combined total of CA$10 million.

An investigation into other carriers allegedly involved in the cartel is continuing.

Air Canada is among those previously served with notice that its freight practices were being investigated. The Montreal-based company took a CA$125 million provision related to the investigation in early 2008 but the matter has yet to be resolved.

Aitken said in the news release that competition enforcement is the bureau's top priority.
