A woman who bit a police officer while being arrested for breaking into her own car has avoided spending time in jail.

Brisbane District Court heard mother-of-two Jennifer Elizabeth Somers, 30, was drunk and rummaging through the contents of a car parked in a Moorooka street when police, in the area investigating a report of a car being broken into, approached her.

Noticing broken glass on the road near the car, the officers began questioning Somers, who replied by swearing and refusing to tell them her name.

Crown prosecutor Isaac Munsie said as Somers started to walk away, the two police officers placed her under arrest for wilful damage of the car.

Somers then gave officers her name, and although this matched the registered owner of the car, Mr Munsie said the officers feared she may have been lying.

They continued with the arrest but a struggle between her and Constable Peter Lashford broke out. As Const Lashford held her in a headlock, she bit his right bicep, Mr Munsie said.

Medical evidence showed the bite did not break the skin but Const Lashford claimed in a victim impact statement there had been some bleeding.

Somers was tested for transmittable diseases and her results proved negative, so the officer did not require testing, Mr Munsie said.

Defence barrister Harry Fong said his client, a call centre worker, told police the car in question belonged to her and was parked outside her sister's unit where she had been drinking.
