| The Olympic ideals of "faster, higher, stronger" were set to be radically redefined next month at something called the Sex Olympia on the Gold Coast, but the organisers say they have been forced to cancel because of threats and harassment.
Last October the promoter, Rainbow Events, put out the word that it was seeking "sexual athletes from all over the world to join in the festivities". Potential participants were promised that the occasion would be based upon concepts of sexual freedom and equality, with gold medals offered in events such as the marathon shag and weightlifting. However, a notice on the Olympia's website advises it has been called off.
"After receiving numerous threatening emails questioning our ethics, plus telephone calls abusing our morals and with our website been attacked frequently, we've decided Australia is not quite ready for Sex Olympia 2009. It's a real surprise and a sad indictment on tolerance in our country."
Robbie Swan of the Eros Foundation said it was likely that the event would have struck problems had it gone ahead. "What they failed to understand is that people were paying to watch sexual acts," he said. "In a sense the State Government would have judged that to be a form of prostitution, and they'd have to be licensed."

Meanwhile, Swan assures the Diary that the campaign by his new political party, the Australian Sex Party, for a Senate seat is going well. The party has applied to the Australian Electoral Commission for official status and is at the "waiting for complaints" stage after ads calling for submissions on its registration were placed in newspapers a fortnight ago. Swan reports, rather proudly, that some Christian groups are already calling on the main parties to make the Sex Party their last preference.

A week after Bruno described Kevin Rudd as "so hot" on Rove, Julia Gillard has enjoyed her own unlikely piece of flattery during an early-morning appearance on Ten's Meet The Press yesterday. In the middle of a discussion of Work Choices with the fill-in host Bill Woods, Gillard's lapel microphone fell off. "You had a little wardrobe malfunction," Woods told her. "You're now in the same league as Jennifer Hawkins." Looking rather pleased, Gillard replied: "Thank you for that. I'll take that comparison".

The last time we visited the blog of the state MP Pru Goward it was noted that, despite her excellent advice on housekeeping, her constituents were reluctant to join in the discussion. The exact number of responses to her blogging was, in fact, zero. However, this situation appears to have changed. Despite the blog being sadly neglected - the member for Goulburn's last entry was on February 28, celebrating the resumption of Parliament - the number of responses has grown impressively, to more than 1000. The problem is that only two entries are genuine, and all the others are spam offering Goward - the Opposition's spokeswoman on community services and the status of women - advice on where to buy cheap drugs such as Viagra or the very best place to gamble online. She cannot argue that they do not relate to her portfolios.
