| Subject: OZschwitz gulag: Heroic union man aided free trading 'smugglers,' court told Tue Jun 30, 2009 3:33 am | |
| A SENIOR Maritime Union of Australia official who attended government port security meetings allegedly helped a crime syndicate as it tried to smuggle $170 million worth of drugs into Australia.
Dave Perry, a former MUA assistant Queensland branch secretary, is alleged to have fed a crime syndicate information during two drug importations in 2006.
Mr Perry, who denies impropriety and who stood down from the union in 2007, has a Commonwealth maritime security pass. In 2003 he attended meetings of the NSW Government-owned Port of Brisbane security committee. The committee includes government and police officials and develops port security assessments and plans.
The airing in court of allegations by a Crown prosecutor that Mr Perry was regarded by a drug boss as "a reliable, independent source of information" comes after revelations that a three-year Australian Crime Commission inquiry has found that crime syndicates are exploiting serious security gaps at wharves and airports.
