A former Victorian policewoman today received a suspended jail sentence for perverting the course of justice over forged character references used in a court case.

Judge Paul Lacava told Stephanie Beattie she had stupidly breached a trust for her own interests that "struck at the heart of the criminal justice system".

Judge Lacava said in the County Court that Beattie, 23, was a "very good young woman" who had ruined her career through a lack of judgement and lack of maturity.
