| THE chief executive officer of Sydney Ferries, Geoffrey Smith, decided it was all right to use his corporate credit card for personal expenses, provided he clearly marked the items with an "R" - meaning "to be reimbursed".
Despite his commitment to repay the money, the Independent Commission Against Corruption heard yesterday that Mr Smith had spent much of his term in financial straits, with serious sickness in the family, a reduced income and a $1.4 million mortgage.
Between September 2006 and March this year, his personal expenditure came to $237,102 on items such as groceries, furnishings, alcohol, club membership, electrical goods, hardware, perfume, books, theatre tickets, school fees and holidays.
