A QUARTER of Sydney's ferries are unavailable to commuters each day, either in repairs or without enough staff, government documents reveal.

The documents, obtained by the NSW Opposition under freedom of information laws, show that in the 24 months between July 2006 and June 2008, Sydney Ferries were running, on average, only 75 per cent of its fleet.

The release of the data will increase pressure on Sydney Ferries as it fends off attempts to privatise the service.

According to the agency's website, it operates 28 vessels on five major routes. Tuesday's budget also allocated $4 million a year to operate a service between Parramatta and Circular Quay.
