The Federal Government's warning that big painful spending cuts are needed to fight inflation might be a bit easier to swallow if the razor gang turned its blade on an outrageous perk the politicians are retaining for themselves.

If Kevin Rudd is serious about cutting waste and not passing the buck, then a perfect chance to prove it is to abolish the elite club that rewards former politicians with up to 50 taxpayer-funded flights anywhere in Australia every year.

Some of the 120 members have not sat in Parliament for more than 20 years, yet taxpayers are still picking up the tab for their air travel long after they have been sacked at the ballot box or retired.
