| ITALY'S tough new policy on illegal immigrants has gathered new force as more than 500 boat people intercepted by navy ships near the tiny island of Lampedusa were returned to Libya in less than five days.
Italian newspapers reported over the weekend that the new policy of "respingimenti" - or refusal by pushing away - led to 200 asylum seekers, including 42 women and two newborn babies, being transferred from their boat to an Italian navy boat on Saturday and returned to Tripoli.
The Minister for the Interior, Roberto Maroni, confirmed yesterday that the Police Chief, Antonio Manganelli, had told him by telephone on Sunday morning that another 240 boat people had been returned to Tripoli.
