Economists say the tumult wrought by the global financial crisis and an ambitious policy agenda has resulted in the Government playing its biggest role in corporate Australia since the deregulation drive began in the 1980s.

In the chaotic final months of last year when markets were dysfunctional, the Rudd Government's new hands-on role was accepted almost blindly. But now the dust has settled, questions are emerging about whether the Government has implemented the right policies and how its role should evolve as market conditions return to normal.
