| "THERE'S just not many of us left."
This was the grim reality painted by 87-year-old Ray Eason, a veteran of the Borneo campaign in World War II, at yesterday's Anzac Day Dawn Service at Martin Place.
When the anthems were played for the thousands who had gathered to remember Australia's fallen and those still serving, Mr Eason struggled to his feet.
His only regret these days is not being able to share a beer with his army veteran mates."It's just a part of life - there are 25 of us dying a day," he said.
But, although the number of diggers is dwindling by the year, a record 19,000 people took part in yesterday's march from the cenotaph in Martin Place along George Street to Hyde Park.
NSW RSL acting president John Haines said it was a fantastic result.
"It's been a very successful day weather-wise, which brought out a lot of people from all walks of life, particularly from the suburbs," he said after the dawn service.
At the commemoration service acting Premier Carmel Tebbutt said Anzac Day celebrated the extraordinary achievements of ordinary Australians. "Our presence, at services in every Australian city and town, is proof that this nation continues to understand the true values of the original Anzacs," she said. "Nothing guarantees that the Anzac Day story will be retained and retold except our commitment to do so, to commemorate it and share it with future generations.
