Is this Gal Gadot’s “Imagine” 2.0?
A new celebrity-studded PSA for the “I Take Responsibility” campaign — featuring “influential voices from the white community [taking] responsibility for turning the racist tide in America” — is getting criticized online for its overly dramatic delivery and for stars “making this about” themselves.
The black-and-white video starts out with stars like Sarah Paulson, Aaron Paul, Kesha, Justin Theroux, Debra Messing, Bryce Dallas Howard, and more solemnly staring at the camera and saying, “I take responsibility,” followed by a time they may have ignored racial injustice.
Julianne Moore tweeted the video and added, “Today, #ITakeResponsibility for my role in eradicating racism in America. Unless white America acknowledges its privilege, systemic racism will persist. Act Now. What will you commit to?”
In some instances, it was evident that the actors were reading from a script, like when Stanley Tucci said, “I will no longer allow an unchecked moment. I will no longer allow racist hurtful words, jokes, stereotypes, no matter how big or small, to be uttered in my presence.”
While some fans praised the actors for their message, others said the 2-minute clip missed the mark.
One person commented online, “No matter how well-intentioned, they always fall back on performative nonsense. They have this insatiable need to come out ‘good’ and righteous in every situation.”
Another added, “How do celebs keep messing this up so badly? Stop making this about yourself and donate $1 million each to a local organization helping Black people!!!!!”
Marlow Stern of The Daily Beast quipped, “Ending Racism: The Musical.” The tweet has more than 8,000 likes.
Many users singled out Paul, 40, claiming his tone at the end of the clip reminded them of his “Breaking Bad” character Jesse Pinkman.
“I thought Aaron Paul was going to shout out ‘yeah bitch!'” one person joked.
People also remarked that the video was reminiscent of Gadot’s “Imagine” montage during the coronavirus outbreak, which also sparked outrage.
