THE head of the most powerful Aboriginal organisation in the Northern Territory has criticised the federal intervention in remote indigenous communities, saying it has increased violence, alcohol abuse and suicides.

Wali Wunungmurra, chairman of the Northern Land Council, which represents most indigenous groups in northern Australia, told the Herald the $1.5 billion takeover of 73 communities had prompted a drift of Aboriginal people into urban areas such as Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, where "bad behaviour has increased".
