| Subject: It's actually little wonder young people are saying 'no' to sex Fri Jan 24, 2020 6:08 pm | |
| Contrary to what any man who has dated me may attest, it actually pains me to say, “I told you so”. You see, for years now I have been insisting that sex has become so pervasive, accessible and demystified that soon enough its social saturation will render it a soulless mundanity, so ho hum we just won’t be bothered. And lo and behold, my prophecy has been realised!
Recent surveys have turned my fears from conjecture to fact, showing that adult Australians are not only indulging less, but up and coming generations are turning off from turning-on in droves. The recent ABC Australia Talks survey of 50,000 people is a case in point, revealing that this country’s Millennials are having half as much sex as their parents, with 18 to 24 year-olds joining those over 75 as the least likely to be indulging.
These stats echo a Western trend, with US and UK studies also revealing twice as many Millennials were sexually inactive in their early 20s than the prior generation. Meanwhile, in Japan, a massive 43 per cent of young people aged between 18 and 34 today confess to being virgins!
So, how can this be happening when sex has never been easier to get thanks to dating apps and premarital sex, and no obligation hook-ups and sexual fluidity are no longer considered shameful or taboo, you may ask? Why would we be saying no when we have easy access to contraception and are educated enough to insist on safe sex and when drugs such as Viagra allow those who may have been previously unable to get up and running?
