| Subject: OZschwitz idiots: War Memorial overreach: spending $500m Wed Nov 20, 2019 5:55 pm | |
| Late last year, the Australian War Memorial hosted a carefully scripted function at Parliament House which presented a huge, costly and arguably unnecessary redevelopment of the memorial. The estimated cost was almost $500 million, and public consultation was minimal.
Immediate public dissension arose and the controversy has continued, essentially ignored by the memorial. The plan seemed long on hyperbole and short on justification but, as the previous director, I chose to remain silent. However, outgoing director Brendan Nelson’s attacks on his critics beg a response. “These people are simply facile and need to get real,” he reportedly said.
These comments are disrespectful to the many who genuinely disagree with him, and surprising for an agency head. Nelson likes to quote Charles Bean, but an important part of Bean’s vision was that the memorial should be a "gem of its kind" and "not colossal in scale".
