Within hours of The Spectator’s Joanna Frketich reporting on the fake, the internet lit up with trolls, climate change deniers, flat earthers and libertarian conspiracy theorists all seizing on the fakes to discredit the petition.

To the 34 people — including a handful in Hamilton — who fraudulently signed a climate crisis warning, as well as the people who missed the fakes and allowed them to remain on the list of 11,000 scientists: Thanks for nothing.
The petition was well intended. Its purpose was to renew the alarm on climate change and to call for immediate action. Lead author William Ripple from Oregon State University said there was screening in place intended to spot and remove fake signatures. But clearly, it failed. The net result is a huge loss of credibility for the people behind the petition, and a black eye for the climate change movement.

Climate change is fake, a hoax perpetrated by "the elites" and this discredited warning is proof, or so their stories go.

It didn't take long for the discredited list to disappear, but the damage had been done by then. Score one for the global minority who still believe this crisis isn't real and we shouldn't be bothered trying to mitigate the impact in the interests of leaving a habitable planet for future generations.
