| A NUMBER of shipping agents from Singapore are found to have reaped millions of ringgits in profits by masterminding illegal oil transactions from ship to ship in the waters of Pengerang, Kota Tinggi.
They are said to offer cheaper, quicker and easier oil transaction services without having to follow the fixed procedures and laws, according to an Utusan Malaysia report on Monday.
In many cases, the activities involved marine fuel oil transactions for ship engines.
The modus operandi is to carry out oil transactions outside the port. This way, there is no need for permits and payments for service charges.
In simpler terms, customers can avoid paying thousands of ringgits to stop at the ports in this country.
Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency of Southern Region Commander, First Admiral Che Hassan Jusoh said preliminary investigations found the activities are linked to shipping agents from Singapore.
'The agent was found to be operating on land to deal with customers interested in the illegal oil transactions. A ship which cruised around the Pengerang waters served as a platform to transfer the oil to interested ships,' he told Utusan Malaysia.
