Funny: What letter? Australia Post chief misses Senate hearing

Australia Post's apparent failure to deliver a letter sent to its own head office has made it the only government agency whose chief missed a Senate estimates hearing.

A letter was sent to Australia Post in April last year requesting managing director Graeme John make himself available for future hearings of the Senate standing committee on the environment, communications and the arts.

The same letter was sent to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), ABC and SBS, all of which dispatched either their managing director or chairman to Canberra.

However, Mr John failed to front today's hearing, with Australia Post's corporate secretary Michael McCloskey turning up in his place.

Liberal senator Eric Abetz said it was interesting to note that the other agencies slated to appear before the hearing had all received the letter and complied with the request.

Senator Abetz added that the letter sent to Mr McCloskey stated that it was the committee's view that estimates hearings were an important part of the public accountability process.

"It had emphasised that heads of agencies should be available to attend estimates hearings and answer questions," Senator Abetz said.
