To the Editor: In response to retired Captain Thomas P. Cunningham’s letter concerning or suggesting Federal buybacks for AR-15 style assault weapons, I have but one question: Will the Crips, Bloods, Folk-Nation, MS-13, and other vicious and ruthless street gangs that are entrenched in cities such as Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Baltimore, etc. be participating in such a program?

The Folk-Nation in Chicago for example, has been an entrenched organized violent syndicate that dates back decades and includes equally violent subsets in NYC that are responsible for hundreds of murders.

Will the constitutional scholars associated with such gangs willfully give up their firearms for the betterment of their communities and to adhere to a Federal law mandating them to do so? What of the 18th Street Crips gang in Los Angeles? The Bloods MOB sets in NYC and Baltimore?

What of the notorious biker gangs in the Midwest such as the Hell’s Angels and the Mongrel Motorcycle Club who list gun-running and methamphetamine sales as their main source of income? Will they willfully adhere to such a Federal mandate because it’s their civic duty to do so?

Like yourself, I spent a career in law enforcement and retired as a Sergeant in the NYPD, with my entire career spent in proactive and aggressive narcotic and gun-apprehension units. I’m not a rabid fan of assault weapons and the carnage and destruction they cause and I’ve witnessed it firsthand.

But I’m equally a pragmatist, libertarian, realist, and an originalist who is a firm believer in the sanctity of the Constitution. Let’s clean up the criminals’ house first before my, yours or any law-abiding citizen’s constitutional rights are infringed upon.

Chicago already has the strictest gun laws and statutes on the books in the nation. And yet, not a weekend goes by where the average casualty rate doesn’t easily surpass those of such nations as Iraq and Venezuela.

No sir, there is much work to be done before we as a nation of laws goes down that slippery slope.
