Police are investigating a racist letter sent to the mayor of Charlotte and other black officials in the city.

The letter, received by all members of Charlotte's city council, said that all members of color should be "tarred and feathered and run out of town."

Employees working for the office of Mayor Vi Lyles confirmed that she was among the recipients of the anonymous letter received this week, though her staff is said to have intercepted it before she read it.

"I do believe you need to go back to where you came from if you don't BEGIN to show this great country some RESPECT and HONOR," the letter stated. "We'll round you up and send you screaming to the concentration camps where you belong."

"If I can assume the intent, the intent was to intimidate," Democratic councilman Braxton Winston said. Braxton, who is black, was one of several lawmakers to receive the threatening letter. "We get hate mail all the time. But this one was unique … It was pretty intense, pretty intense, [and] pretty well thought out."

Police in Charlotte confirmed they were investigating the origin of the letter. The FBI said: "We are aware of the letters and (are) reviewing the material."
