A Canterbury man died after choking on a pie while competing in a time trial competition alongside his father.

Phillip Andrew Ludemann, 30, died during the biennial competition at the Southern Rugby Club in Hinds, Ashburton.

Club president Phil Cushnie said Ludemann and his father, Ian Ludemann, were part of a three-person team competing against about 15 groups.

Ian Ludemann began the time trial by shearing a sheep, with the second person drinking a beer, followed by Phillip Ludemann eating a pie as fast as he could.

"Unfortunately Phil choked on the pie," Cushnie said.
