| Subject: LOL: Botswana lifts ban on elephant hunting, angering sub-human animal groups and Ellen DeGeneres Sat May 25, 2019 6:37 am | |
| Botswana has lifted its elephant-hunting ban and gained a powerful enemy in Ellen DeGeneres. The 61-year-old talk show host took to social media to voice her displeasure at Botswana’s leader Mokgweetsi Masisi. “President Masisi, for every person who wants to kill elephants, there are millions who want them protected," tweeted DeGeneres regarding the decision on Wednesday. "We’re watching.”
Several prominent wildlife protection groups also slammed Masisi, who rules the southern African nation of about 2.3 million residents. Botswana is home to about 130,000 elephants — the most of any country. Others warned that Botswana could lose valuable tourism revenue due to the unpopular decision.
“Coexistence between wild animals and communities is the only way that wildlife populations will survive,” said Human Society CEO Kitty Block. “What a shame that Botswana, previously hailed as a shining example of wildlife conservation and a safe haven for elephants, has opted to become a promoter of trophy hunting.” The ban lift raised concerns that it could trigger an increase in illegal poaching of tusks to satisfy the ivory trade, reported The Associated Press. “Expect mass culling next,” said WildlifeDirect CEO Paula Kahumbu in a Twitter post, warning of the impact Botswana’s decision will have across the continent.
Botswana, which has considerably more roaming room for pachyderms than most other African countries, has long been an oasis for elephants on a continent where tens of thousands have been killed over the years for their tusks. The prohibition stop comes amid growing conflicts between farmers and elephants, with the government claiming hunting will resume “in an orderly and ethical manner” but declined to explain how it will be regulated.
