| Subject: EU: Governments seem to have embraced the end of austerity but it is not without controversy Thu May 16, 2019 4:02 am | |
| The raft of fresh economic data out this Wednesday will probably be a mixed bag for the eurozone. If confirmed by Eurostat, a flash GDP reading of 0.4 per cent growth in the first quarter of the year will show the eurozone kept humming at a respectable pace after a grim end to 2018. But policymakers know they must remain alert. There may be far worse to come as the world feels the fallout from the tariff wars between the US and China.
It begs the question: what levers does the eurozone have at its disposal to fight off the threat of recession? The most obvious is a move to turn on the fiscal taps after years of post-crisis austerity. Plenty of governments seem to be doing just that.
