BBC television presenter Jeremy Clarkson, on tour in Australia with Top Gear Live, has been forced to apologise after calling British Prime Minister Gordon Brown a "one-eyed Scottish idiot".

Clarkson, the face of the popular motoring show, made the comment in Sydney while comparing Brown, who lost sight in one eye while playing rugby as a teenager, with his Australian counterpart, Kevin Rudd.

He was criticised for the remarks by British politicians and the Royal National Institute of Blind People.

Clarkson apologised for most of the remark but told The Sun newspaper in London: "The idiot bit … there's no chance I'll apologise for that."
