| New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has vowed to toughen up the country's gun laws in the wake of a terrorist attack on two mosques, during which a gunman shot 49 Muslim worshippers dead using five firearms he had acquired legally.
The suspected gunman, 28-year-old Australian citizen Brenton Tarrant, will appear in Christchurch District Court charged with murder on Saturday.
Ms Ardern said in a press conference that the white supremacist attacker had two semi-automatic weapons, two shotguns and a lever action firearm. Ms Ardern said she had been advised the gunman obtained a Category A licence in November 2017, and 'under that, he was able to acquire the guns that he held'.
'While work has been done as to the chain of events that led to both the holding of this gun licence and the possession of these weapons, I can tell you one thing right now, our gun laws will change,' Ms Ardern told media.
Two other people remain in policy custody, and Ms Ardern said today that 'inquiries are ongoing to establish whether [they] were directly involved with this incident.'
New Zealand's gun laws have remained largely unchanged since 1992, when the 1983 law was toughened in response to another massacre in which 13 people died.
