The Kentucky legislature's fresh, bipartisan approach to pension reform may be short-lived.
Some Democrats and advocates for government retirees are alarmed that a libertarian think tank based in California will be advising the new bipartisan group of lawmakers charged with taking a new look at pension reform.
"Yesterday's first meeting of the group was good, and the first steps were truly bipartisan," said Senate Democratic Leader Morgan McGarvey. "But we have to keep a level of trust that won't be possible if a Koch brothers think tank is serving as an expert resource for the group."
McGarvey was referring to comments of Senate President Robert Stivers, R-Manchester, at the end of Tuesday's meeting, informing members that Reason Foundation would be offering free consultation services to the working group.
“The Reason group will be here listening in and available the whole time at no cost to us. But they have a lot of experience," Stivers said.

Reason Foundation's website describes itself as an organization that "advances free society by developing, applying, and promoting libertarian principles, including individual liberty, free markets, and the rule of law."
The website lists David H. Koch, the conservative political donor and activist, as one of the foundation's trustees.
Jim Carroll, president of the advocacy group Kentucky Government Retirees, said in a statement Wednesday morning that he was alarmed to learn the Reason Foundation is involved with the working group.
"We believe strongly that any outside consultation should be provided by an organization that has no obvious ideological bias. The Reason Foundation is a dark money group that has a specific political viewpoint," Carroll said.
Leaders of the General Assembly's Republican majorities announced last week that they would start anew in trying to draft a pension reform plan. The first step of that process was the creation of the Public Pension Working Group, a panel that held its first informational meeting Tuesday.
Stivers did not immediately return a phone message left at his office on Wednesday.
