| They have a saying in Swedish politics – “painted with a brown brush”.

With the September 9 election just weeks away, though, Jimmie Akesson, leader of the Sweden Democrats – a party founded by admirers of the Nazis, with roots in white supremacy and which still fiercely opposes immigration – is shaking off the last of history’s stain.
Breakfast TV recently included Akesson in a series of political profiles of party leaders – going to his hometown, asking about his childhood.
And while neither of the major parties has said it would consider a coalition – a move that would guarantee government on current polling – the centre-right Moderates have said they would include Akesson in post-election talks for a new agreement on immigration.
