KUSTER, O’DONNELL STOPPED. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol checkpoints in New Hampshire and nearby states often provoke controversy.

Last week, the American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire criticized the questioning by agents of passengers aboard a Concord Coach bus in Maine. On Memorial Day weekend, 17 people were arrested on immigration violations at an Interstate 93 checkpoint.
Earlier in May, a state court ruled that drug evidence seized during checkpoints in 2017 was unconstitutionally obtained because police dogs were used without a warrant or a reasonable suspicion of criminal activity.
And just last weekend, the CBP stopped hundreds of vehicles in the Woodstock area. Five people were arrested for being in the U.S. illegally. The agency said the people were from Brazil, China, Ecuador, El Salvador and Mexico.
Border agents are allowed to set up checkpoints within 100 miles of the border. Woodstock is about 90 miles from Canada.
We’ve confirmed that among those who were stopped were two congressional candidates – and one of them happens to be the incumbent from the same congressional district in which the checkpoints were set up -- Democratic U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster.
“I take border security and our national security very seriously,” Kuster told New Hampshire Primary Source, confirming that she was stopped.
“However, I have concerns about the increasing frequency of these interior checkpoints and the potential disruption they may cause. Tourism is critical to New Hampshire’s economy, and I worry that these checkpoints may send the message that we are not a welcoming place.
“I’ve reached out to CBP for additional information about these checkpoints and will carefully monitor their application,” Kuster said.
Also stopped was Justin O’Donnell of Nashua, a Libertarian Party of New Hampshire candidate for the same 2nd Congressional District. And he didn’t take kindly to it.
O’Donnell, as it turns out, was returning to Nashua from the annual Free State Project Porcfest gathering in Lancaster. When he was asked by an agent if he is a U.S. citizen, he refused to answer.
And O’Donnell posted on Facebook what happened next.
